Free YouTube videos offer plenty of tutorials on web development for beginners. But screencasts have become even more popular since you can quickly record and publish a snippet or feature you’ve developed.

The free app Scrimba is a hot new way to share your code snippets and find examples recorded by others.

These come as raw recordings of an IDE, where you can clearly see what the person is typing at all times. And, the final result appears as raw text, so you can even copy/paste these code snippets for your own work.

The website is totally free to join and you can browse screencasts anonymously, without an account. However, to save your favorites and leave comments, you’ll need to sign up (accounts run through GitHub).

As of writing this post, Scrimba is still technically in beta, so it’s an ever-growing project. The community is not huge, but it has definitely got a large enough userbase that you’ll find plenty of value on this site.

Some developers who record lessons even curate their videos into playlists. For example, this Vue.js list features nine videos (and counting) that teach how to pick up Vue.js from scratch.

Another nice thing is how the website actually feels like a web application. The page load speeds are snappy and you can browse through videos with ease.

The top of the homepage lists all the most popular categories, including HTML, CSS, JS, and libraries such as React.

Browsing through categories, you’ll find some top featured videos, along with the most recently published videos. Some of the newest vids date back a few months since the Scrimba community is still fairly small.

But, you can always join and start contributing with your own casts to increase the consistency of content & build the community, too.

I absolutely recommend saving Scrimba as a learning resource for screencasts. It’s one of the best ways to learn front-end development without paying for lessons.
